The energetic and innovative Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) delivers broad-based education and research aligned to the needs of innovative global industry. Relevance, student care, quality, and multidisciplinary team working are key themes in the way the department operates.
The Department is concerned with ‘what to make’ and ‘how to make it’, and its research interests involve product and process technologies, information technologies, design methodologies, telepresence and organisational modelling.
DMEM operates a range of innovative purpose built design and manufacture laboratories including the new Digital Design and Manufacture Studio (DDMS). The DDMS uniquely brings together data capture, CAD, 3D visualisation, and rapid prototyping capabilities into one integrated environment. Software support for global collaboration and state-of-the-art communication facilities are also key to teaching and research. The Department achieved a research rating of 4 (where 5 is top) in the most recent UK national assessment of research.
